Engine Shed Boxworks

This innovative scheme using 20 modified shipping containers was designed by Childs+Sulzmann Architects to create temporary work space for developing young businesses in the heart of the Temple Meads area of Bristol.

The containers, arranged on two levels and each able to accommodate 8 people, were stripped and refitted off-site and then delivered and installed on the site next to the Engine Shed. The units were glazed at both ends to create a light and airy contemporary work space.

This temporary work space was created to satisfy increasing demand for business work space at Engine Shed while plans for the next phase of development were being developed.

Childs+Sulzmann designed the Temple Meads Boxworks in conjunction with container conversion specialists Forward Space for their client, The Science Research Foundation. Childs+Sulzmann also assisted with the complex ownership issues and obtained the necessary planning and listed building consents in this sensitive location.
